My Experience:
First, I would just like to say that my experience in Nepal and volunteering with VolNepal far surpassed what I had expected. For me, it had always been a dream to volunteer in a third world country and immerse myself in a different culture. I feel so lucky to have been given the opportunity to do what many people never do in their lifetime.

What really made this a great experience for me were the people and the culture. Whenever I interact with the Nepali people they are always very hospitable, kind, humble and all have a great sense of humor. Even though Nepal does not have the same luxuries that people in the U.S. enjoy and may put too much emphasis on, the people here still find happiness in what important things they do have such as family, work, and even school. Every time I rode my bike to the orphanage I saw students in their uniforms going to school and they would wave saying "Hello sir, good morning!" Immediately, I knew that education was very important to Nepali people which made my job at the orphanage even easier.

At the Murry School most of the kids were very outgoing and excited that I was there to teach them. They would always ask me which class I was teaching or what time class starts and what they would learn. They loved it when they could showcase their reading abilities in class whenever I gave them a story to read, and they all read so well for having English as a second language. Play time with the kids was the best experience for me because I got to know them individually and teach them things one on one, all while having fun with them. I feel a lot of compassion for the kids and I am amazed at how they have so little, yet they still have big smiles on their faces when I see them. In the short amount of time that I spent with the kids I feel as if they have become my second family and will be one of the biggest reasons for me to return.

Overall, coming to Nepal was a great life experience. I got to live with an extremely nice and helpful host family which I learned many things from, learn about a different culture, meet other amazing volunteers, see the beautiful sights and sceneries, interact with the local people, and helped shape some of the lives of my students. I would definitely recommend the VolNepal program to anyone who is willing to help others while also helping themselves become more open to what’s going on in the world around them.

Current News
1. Program as a whole:

VolNepal seemed to me a competent organization with a compassionate purpose and a positive impact on its communities. They were thoroughly accommodating and genuinely concerned with my experience, mitigating the stress and discomfort of culture shock.

2. Home Stay:

After a few meals together, I felt intimate friends with the family operating the homestay. They showed typical Nepali hospitality and generosity, and made me feel at once an honored guest and a friend. The accommodations were comfortable, the food was tasty, and the homey atmosphere provided respite from the urban insanity of Kathmandu.
