Teaching is more than reciting knowledge; it's about giving a part of you over to the students. It is about building bridges, creating links, its about inspiring, its about sharing and more than anything its about giving. As an Australian volunteer teaching in another country you are more than just the teacher of the subject, you are the person that says, 'I care, we care and my country cares'.

Your classroom duties will vary according to the country you have selected but wherever you are you will rise to meet the challenges.

In most countries you will be teaching what we in your country would call primary aged children from varied backgrounds. Classroom sizes will vary but the level of support you receive from other staff and school networks will not. You can look forward to being a valued and respected member of the school.
In most countries upon your arrival and prior to commencing your placement you will undertake a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Course that will prepare you for the challenges ahead. As these courses are conducted 'in country' there will be a significant level of cultural awareness integrated into the program. This will significantly enhance your teaching and personal experiences. As 'Year Out' selects only the highest level of overseas
partners the TEFL Certificate you receive is recognized internationally and is your passport to other programs.

Your hosts will provide your accommodation and meals. Accommodation (depending on the country) will be with either a host family or shared with other volunteers. It is expected that the teacher volunteer commit to the school and the community is for a minimum of 4-6 months.

Polar Star English School
Polar Star English School is a private school in Chitwan, Gaurijung. The village where it is located is quiet and beautiful. People from different castes and creed are living here. They are friendly and helpful. Most of the people are engaged in agriculture. They have got their own culture and tradition.

Now, the students are learning in this school from class Nursery to class Ten. The total number of students is 500. Most of them come from nearby villages. Majority of students are from lower class. About 25% of them are getting scholarship. There are 27 staffs working in this institution.

Overall administrative as well as academic activities are heading by our principal Under him all the teachers and other school staffs are working in friendly and co-operative way.

School runs from Sunday to Friday in a week. Saturday is the rest day and school remains closed on that day. Every Fridays, we conduct different extracurricular activities including Singing, Dancing, Sports, etc. after Tiffin Time. Four Terminal Examinations are conducted in a Year. Once a year we go for educational tour.

Reasons to need for volunteers:
As all the teachers are Nepali, the students are not getting chance to know about the different parts of the world. If we had volunteers from foreign countries, they would get chance to know about their countries which would be more fruitful rather than studying in the books. Direct interaction with them would help the students to study more interestingly. On another hand, most of the students are weak in English conversation. English is now international language and common means of communication. Most of the books except Nepali are taught in English language. For these reasons, we think it would be helpful if had foreign volunteers. We would also get opportunities to exchange our views and ideas with them.

The Murray Foundation:
(orphans School, orphans hostel and farming program)

The Murry Foundation believes in the preservation of all aspects of our natural world. The Murry Foundation works tirelessly to expose and eradicate the cruelties that exist in our modern age; the savage mistreatment of animals, destruction of vital ecosystems and the suffering that exists within humanity itself. The Foundation believes in long term solutions through careful planning and education that will inevitably lead to self-sustainability and an end to the needless destruction of our planet.

The Murray Foundation is a non-profit, non-salary taking organization that supports like minded institutions. We believe that charity is unconditional and that 100% of donations must reach the cause for which they were intended. The Foundation currently supports a myriad of projects including the development of the world's first orphan village, that will bring orphans off the street into a caring refuge that will teach them long term survival and development, while working with their environment. The Foundation has also saved thousands of animals and has recently purchased new land in South Africa that will provide sanctuary for over 4500 animals, many of which are endangered and have already suffered intolerable cruelties.

The Foundation has already received many international awards, including Best Conservation Charity in Nepal. The curse of an orphan is in many ways one of the only dark certainties in the world today. Lives can be tainted and shrouded in pessimism by karmic justice, inactivity and bad luck; they are however affected by one's own actions. The orphan however is born into the body of the world, a crippled world, the spine missing. The orphan has no promise of paternal strength or maternal warmth; they are a solitary being within a race that draws strength and hope from a family the orphan does not possess.

The Murray Foundation has been synonymous with the provision of hope to the vulnerable and needy, whether the beneficiary is animal or human. The Foundation understands the inequalities that exist in our contemporary society and seeks to uphold the value of the world's most precious commodity: Life.

We recognized that while the school and village had an incredible sense of community, these children have never had the benefit of a parental figure who they know will look after them. The children have only known desertion and loss and we wanted to give them the opportunity to feel part of an immediate family.

'Our work is all about long term solutions, not a quick fix' comments Adam. 'We have to address all aspects of the children's development. In the UK, a child's education and family life are considered to be the crucial factors in their development. We would be doing these children an injustice if we did not consider all aspects of their development.
