Homeless Colony, Nepal sits on a ridge with rice terraces cascading down all around & overlooking the Kathmandu Valley. Winter is approaching & the surrounding cities are busy winnowing the last of the harvest. I was met with bright, friendly, curious, smiles & greetings by both staff & students.
Children ranging in age from 5 to 19 years make up the colony population of 30. By comparison with other orphanage the size is small & bare but, the students are enthusiastic & all classes from Grade 3 upward are conducted in English. Their curriculum in Science, Mathematics, English, Nepali, and Social Science & Health is pretty similar in content to their corresponding levels in every where. My first week was one of answering a multitude of questions about my family in particular,& about USA in general.....the few photos I had of these were studied with intent. Teachers and other staff were kind enough to let me accompany them to their rooms so I could familiarize myself with teaching styles & expected classroom procedures, as well as the general content of subject areas. I was encouraged to test my skills amongst students & staff in table tennis, badminton & skipping.... all popular pastimes in the orphanage yard outside of informal classes (help in their home works).
I would like to request every one if you would like to volunteer in Nepal, Volunteer Nepal is the best and Mr. Anish will find you the appropriate place for volunteering. I personally thanks Mr. Neupane and his kind support in this regards.
